Cytinaceae are sister to Muntingiaceae (Malvales)

Abstract: The holoparasitic family Cytinaceae (Cytinus and Bdallophyton) was previously shown to be allied with Malvales, however its closest photosynthetic ancestor was not determined. A molecular phylogenetic study was conducted using nuclear small‐subunit rDNA and three chloroplast genes (the latter missing from the holoparasites but included to stabilize the overall tree topology) using Cytinaceae and exemplars from all recognized families from an expanded Malvales. Using maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood met… Show more

(Nickrent, 2007). Los restantes géneros de Rafflesiaceae (Rafflesia R.…”

“…Many parasitic plants have been difficult to place in classification systems due to their highly modified or reduced morphology, and the advent of molecular systematics has resolved many of the mysteries associated with them; most are now placed to family and order (see APG II, 2003; APG III, 2009; Nickrent, 2009a). The lack of distinguishing morphological characters in many parasitic plants has often resulted in them being placed together in classification systems, and one of the major changes due to the molecular data has been the dismemberment of the order Rafflesiales (Nickrent et al , 2004; Nickrent, 2007). Molecular studies have, however, been hampered in many cases because the genes in the plastid (or chloroplast) genome, some of which are involved in photosynthesis, have often been lost or substantially altered in these parasitic plants (e.g.…”
