Cytarabine ears – A side effect of cytarabine therapy

Abstract: Cytarabine, a pyramidine analog, is used for treating various hematological malignancies such as acute leukemias and lymphomas. Side effects of cytarabine are dose dependent and include bone marrow suppression, fever, cerebellar toxicity, cardiomyopathy, hepato-renal insufficiency, necrotizing enterocolitis, pancreatitis, acute respiratory distress, corneal toxicity and dermatological side effects. The dermatological side effects can be immediate or due to delayed hypersensitivity reactions. They have been att… Show more

“…The results of this study are anticipated to be useful for the development of P2 as an alternative drug for the treatment of leukemia. various side effects including bone marrow suppression, fever, cerebellar toxicity, cardiomyopathy, and hepatorenal insufficiency [5,6]. Therefore, one challenge to improve leukemia treatment satisfaction is to identify new highly effective therapeutic agents that have fewer side effects on normal cells.…”

“…Although these methods can lead to remission in most patients, the recurrence rate is very high, and the long-term survival rate is low. Notably, high-dose combination chemotherapy can cause patients to develop drug resistance and serious side-effects, such as bone marrow suppression, gastrointestinal reactions, and cardiotoxicity [6][7][8][9].…”
