Cysts of the prostate and seminal vesicles: MR imaging findings in 11 cases.

Abstract: In all cases, low-and high-signal masses were observed on Ti-and T2-weighted images, respectively. The cysts were unilocular with a sharply defined margin, ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 cm in diameter. The thin wall was of low signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Our experience suggests that MR imaging is useful in demonstrating the liquid content of prostatic and seminal-vesicle cysts and in establishing their size and location.

“…They are of endodermal origin and are the most common congenital prostatic cysts. As they may be associated with pseudohermaphroditism, hypospadias, cryptorchism and unilateral renal agenesis, they are often diagnosed in childhood [1,3,5,6]. Müllerian duct cysts, on the other hand, are of mesodermal origin.…”

“…The advent of modern imaging techniques such as transrectal ultrasound, computed tomography, and mag netic resonance imaging has made the diagnosis of cystic lesions of the seminal vesicles more frequent [7][8][9]. Usual ly the cysts are 5 cm or less in diameter and either asymp tomatic or with aspecific symptoms, while lesions larger than 8-lOcm occur less frequently.…”

“…Prostatic cysts are usually considered as benign lesions which can be accurately and definitely diagnosed by sonography [13,16], by CT [17] and by MRI [2,5,10,18]. Due to that fact in most diagnosed cases there is no pathologic confirmation to the imaging diagnosis.…”

“…Due to that fact in most diagnosed cases there is no pathologic confirmation to the imaging diagnosis. Gevenois et al [18] consider MRI of prostatic cysts superior to CT and sonography because it provides full anatomic definition due to its large field of view and its ability to obtain direct images in multiplanar planes.…”
