Cystic Colon Duplication as Differential Diagnosis to Ovarian Cyst

Abstract: Objective: We report the case of a female fetus with a single spherical anechoic cyst on the right side of the lower abdomen first diagnosed at 22 weeks of pregnancy. Methods: Serial ultrasound monitoring and needle aspiration of the cyst were performed. Results: The cyst grew during pregnancy up to 8 cm diameter. Needle aspiration was performed at 33 and 36 weeks. At 38 weeks labor was induced and a girl was delivered spontaneously. Postnatally the child showed abdominal distention, vomiting, and an obstructi… Show more

“…The cyst was percutaneously drained twice [14]. In the second report, a very large (8.6 × 7.6 × 7.1 cm) colonic duplication initially thought to be of ovarian origin was percutaneously drained twice to minimize the risk of ovarian torsion and avoid the risk of intestinal compression [15]. The need for prenatal therapy has been also reported once for an intrathoracic enteric duplication (2 cases that presented mediastinal shift and hydrops treated by placing shunts between the duplication and the amniotic cavity) [16].…”

“…Although it is rather easy to detect an obvious fetal abdominal cyst with ultrasonography, it may sometimes be problematic to identify the true origin [5][6][7][8] . While some lesions may Table 3.…”

“…Another rare etiology of FAC is enteric duplication cysts, antenatal diagnosis of which are challenging because of nonspecific structure and localization (15,16).…”

“…Also Meyberg et al reported a case with solitary cyst on right lower abdomen and needle aspiration was applied twice in the antenatal period. The case admitted to the hospital with vomiting and abdominal distention in the postnatal period was operated with the diagnosis of duplication cyst of the colon (16). Eventually, prenatal diagnosis is important for appropriate management before appearance of symptoms or complications.…”
