Cyst of the Larynx

Abstract: In general, the occurrence of cysts in the larynx is rare. Beschorner 1 in 1877 saw 45 cysts among 693 polypoid growths. Of more than 722 benign tumors of the larynx seen at the Mayo Clinic, only 35 have been diagnosed as cysts.2 Of these, only 3 have involved the appendix of the ventricle, like the one we are reporting. “…Of the few cases cited of airway obstruction from laryngeal cysts in adults (Tilley, 1923;Davis, 1923;Fox and Dinholt, 1943;Morgenstern, 1953;Kay, 1956) three deserve special mention in relation to our patients as examples of vallecular cysts causing obstruction. Kay reports a fatal case of acute airway obstruction from a cyst in the vallecula, though the histology suggested that this was a thyroglossal cyst.…”
