Zijn Exil-geschriften betitelde kapelaan van Alveringem Cyriel Verschaeve (1874-1949) als zijn Oorlogsgedenkschriften (1944-1946). Ze zijn neergeschreven in de kastelen van Bad Pyrmont (Nedersaksen) en Gross Prïesen (Tsjechië) en voltooid in Solbad Hall (Oostenrijk). Ze zijn een apologie van zijn collaboratie tijdens WO II. Het manuscript werd na de dood van Verschaeve (9 november 1949) door zijn uitgeefster Martha van de Walle overgebracht naar Vlaanderen en in het geheim bewaard. Het werd, na veel discussie binnen de redactie van het Verzameld Werk van Verschaeve (1954-1961), slechts gedeeltelijk en bewust uitgezuiverd uitgegeven in 1961. De gewraakte passages hadden te maken met de speerpunten van de collaboratie. Pas na het overlijden van de uitgeefster (22 oktober 1980) werd het manuscript overgemaakt aan het Jozef Lootensfonds, bewaarder van de Verschaeve-archieven en kon het tekstkritisch en wetenschappelijk verantwoord in 1990 uitgegeven worden.Het verhaal gaat over de wegvoering uit Alveringem (augustus 1944), zijn lidmaatschap van de ‘Landsleiding’, het allerlaatste collaboratie-orgaan in Duitsland (september 1944-maart 1945), tot zijn vlucht vanuit Gross Priesen, over München, naar Solbad Hall, In zijn Oorlogsgedenkschriften bleef hij trouw aan zijn groot-Germaanse en nationaal-socialistische gedachten, zijn samenwerking :met de SS en Heinrich Himmler. Hij bleef geloven in de mogelijkheid van een verzoening tussen het nationaal-socialisme en de christelijke leer. De vlucht naar Oostenrijk werd nog mogelijk gemaakt vanuit Berlijn. In Solbad Hall maakte hij het einde van de wereldoorlog mee, verwierp de veroordeling van het nationaal-socialisme door paus Pius XII (2 juni 1945) en schreef, naar aanleiding van de atoombommen op Hiroshima en Nagasaki (augustus 1945) enkele pertinente beschouwingen op het oorlogsrecht. Hij keerde zich geheel af van Vlaanderen dat ‘het zijne niet meer was’. Verschaeve heeft met zijn extreem nationalisme en zijn collaboratie onnoemelijk veel schade toegebracht aan de Vlaamse beweging. Constituting an apologia of his wartime collaboration, Verschaeve’s manuscript would be transferred to Flanders posthumously by his editor Martha Van de Walle, who kept it in secret. Only after lengthy discussions by the editors of Verschaeve’s Collected Works would the manuscript be published in 1961, though only partly, as the disputed passages which related to Verschaeve’s involvement in the collaboration’s vanguard were consciously redacted. Following Van de Walle’s passing on 22 October 1980, the manuscript was inherited by the Jozef Lootens Society, who housed Verschaeve’s archives, and ultimately published a text-critical and scientific edition of the manuscript in 1990. The manuscript details Verschaeve’s forced relocation from Alveringem (August 1944), his membership of the ‘Landsleiding’ [Land’s Command] in Germany, the final Flemish collaborating organization (September 1944-March 1945), and finally his flight from Gross Priesen, via Munich, to Solbad Hall. War Memoirs illustrates how Verschaeve remained loyal to the Pan-German and Nazi ideologies, defended his cooperation with the S.S. and Heinrich Himmler, and continued to believe in a reconciliation between Nazism and Christian philosophy. His flight to Austria condoned and conducted by Berlin, Verschaeve experienced the end of the Second World War in Solbad Hall, rejected Pope Pius XII’s condemnation of Nazism (2 June 1945) and wrote down some pertinent reflections on the issue of the law of war following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August 1945). Verschaeve turned his back on Flanders (‘which was no longer his’) and dealt irreparable damage to the Flemish Movement because of his extreme nationalism and collaboration. Now, seventy years after Solbad Hall, the true meaning of his exile is no longer in doubt.
