“…As Turkey remains a non-signatory to the UNCLOS, it does not recognize the right of islands in enjoying EEZs (Sotiriou 2020) which is the case with Greece and Cyprus possessing islands as part of their political boundaries. As Cyprus is an island country with an ethnic Greek population and the epicentre of the EMG pipeline, Nicosia's selection as the permanent Secretariat for the trilateral summits between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus and between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus throws light on its geostrategic importance (Pedi 2019) in terms of both energy as well as regional security in relation with Turkey.
