Cylindrotheca closterium is a species complex as was evidenced by the variations of rbcL gene and SSU rDNA

Abstract: The genus Cylindrotheca consists of a small group of marine diatoms with a few species described. Eleven isolates of diatoms identified as Cylindrotheca closterium morphologically were obtained from Jiaozhou Bay with their nuclear-encoded small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rDNA) and chloroplast-encoded rbcL gene sequences determined in this study. Interestingly, very high sequence divergences of SSU rDNA and rbcL gene were found among these isolates, and numerous nucleotide variation of rbcL gene caused relative… Show more

“…1, cf. also Li et al, 2007 and, suggesting that this morphospecies constitutes a (semi)cryptic species complex rather than a single species, as has been observed in many other diatoms (Mann et al, 2010). We selected strains from a single well-represented lineage in a molecular phylogeny with good (i.e.…”

“…C. closterium has been recorded from marine habitats worldwide. It is to be expected that future studies will unravel this habitat and molecular diversity (Li et al 2007). In this paper, we are providing molecular and morphological (SEM) documentations on our strains (Fig.…”

“…Despite this, many described morphospecies actually comprise several to many species, which are difficult or impossible to distinguish routinely, based on morphology (e.g. Amato et al 2007;Beszteri et al 2007;Li et al 2007;Vanormelingen et al 2008bVanormelingen et al , 2013EllegaarD et al 2008;Trobajo et al 2009;Souffreau et al 2012). Perhaps the most intensively studied diatom genus concerning (pseudo)cryptic species diversity is Sellaphora (Mann 1989a(Mann , 1999(Mann , 2008Mann et al 1999Mann et al , 2004Mann et al , 2009Behnke et al 2004;EVans et al 2007EVans et al , 2008Poulíčková et al 2008;Mann et al 2011).…”
