Diesel engines in heavy-duty vehicles are predicted to maintain a stable presence in the future due to the difficulty of electrifying heavy trucks, mine equipment, and railway cars. This trend encourages the effort to develop new aluminum alloy systems with improved performance at diesel engine conditions of elevated temperature and stress combinations to reduce vehicle weight and, consequently, CO2 emissions. Aluminum alloys need to provide adequate creep resistance at ~300 °C and room-temperature tensile properties better than the current commercial aluminum alloys used for powertrain applications. The studies for improving creep resistance for aluminum casting alloys indicate that their high-temperature stability depends on the formation of high-density uniform dispersoids with low solid solubility and low diffusivity in aluminum. This review summarizes three generations of diesel engine aluminum alloys and focuses on recent work on the third-generation dispersoid-strengthened alloys. Additionally, new trends in developing creep resistance through the development of alloy systems other than Al-Si-based alloys, the optimization of manufacturing processes, and the use of thermal barrier coatings and composites are discussed. New progress on concepts regarding the thermal stability of rapidly solidified and nano-structured alloys and on creep-resistant alloy design via machine learning-based algorithms is also presented.

The European Commission's ambitious plan to reduce CO2 emissions has a significant impact on the global automotive industry. Recent development of new diesel and petrol engines with direct injection is aimed at improving fuel efficiency while maintaining (or enhancing) engine performance. This naturally also increases the demands on the properties of the most stressed engine components (e.g., cylinder heads, engine blocks, pistons), which leads to the development of new materials. Presented work analysed the effect of different mold temperatures (60; 120; 180 °C) on mechanical, physical properties and microstructure of AlSi5Cu2Mg aluminium alloy. This alloy is currently being used for the production of cylinder head castings. The results showed that the changing mold temperature had an effect on mechanical properties (ultimate tensile strength and Young modulus values). SEM with EDX analysis of intermetallic phases revealed there were no size and morphology changes of Cu, Mg and Fe intermetallic phases when the mold temperature changed. No significant effect of different mold temperature on physical properties (thermal and electrical conductivity) and fracture mechanism occurred during experiment. Optimal combination of mechanical and physical properties of AlSi5Cu2Mg alloy was achieved using a permanent mold with temperature ranging from 120 to 180 °C.

Aluminum alloys are one of the most used materials today, and therefore great emphasis is placed on their continuous development. Improving the ratio of strength and stiffness to weight, improving plasticity, casting properties or resistance to corrosion are examples of properties of aluminum alloys that are constantly being improved. This work focuses on the evaluation of the corrosion resistance of the Al-Si5Cu2Mg alloy with graded addition of zirconium (0.05; 0.10; 0.15; 0.20 wt.%). Corrosion resistance was evaluated based on immersion, exposure and potentiodynamic polarization tests. The addition of Zr to the AlSi5Cu2Mg alloy improved the thermodynamic stability in all evaluations. The application of heat treatment led to even more significant increases in corrosion resistance in almost all evaluations. Microscopic observation of the samples revealed mainly pitting corrosion along with intercrystalline corrosion.
