Cyclohexane extract of walnut leaves improves indices of oxidative stress, total homocysteine and lipids profiles in streptozotocin‐induced diabetic rats

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two doses of cyclohexane extract of walnut leaves on total homocysteine, lipids profiles, and indices of oxidative stress including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal (IP) injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg BW). Twenty‐eight male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups, group I: control (received sesame oil as vehicl… Show more

“…Concerning weight, our results showed that there was a weight loss in the study group after injection rather than before injection, and also in the control group. These results are similar to that of Cheng et al, 56 Mestry et al, 45 Jelodar et al, 55 and Jain and Saha 50 who found that STZ-induced diabetes is associated with a significant reduction in the body weight due to hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia, increased muscle wasting and loss of tissue proteins.…”

“…The same thing happened in the study group before and after injection of STZ in accordance with El-Baz et al, 54 who found that animals injected with STZ exhibited a significant elevation in glucose blood levels after 30 days by 2.7-folds, when compared to normal animals. Moreover, Jelodar et al 55 evaluated blood glucose level and found hyperglycemia in different study groups.…”

“…Improving body weight and its related metabolic syndrome can be obtained by healthy balanced diet, physical activity along with supplements by dietary functional foods that have a role in improving obesity and other diseases [33], where foods, plants, and herbal medicine contain a huge amount of natural phytochemicals and other bioactive components that have a positive role on many diseases without any side effects like medications [33]. In this context, the aim of this study was assessing the efficiency of two dietary supplements on obesity and obesity related metabolic disorders and interferon gamma production as an important immune activator cytokine in immune function.…”

“…This reduction was more obvious in the lens of diabetic treatment 1 compared to diabetic treatments 2 and 3. It can be suggested that the action of antioxidants present in the walnut leaves [36] improves the activity of AR in the diabetic groups. The results of this study are consistent with the results obtained by Yoshida et al and Goodarzi et al [55,58], and it can be concluded that the antioxidants and quercetin in the walnut leaf may be effective in reducing the activity of the aldose reductase.…”
