“…A recent example of a Diels-Alder-cyclized quinone dimer is longithorone (163), isolated from a marine tunicate. [78] Other examples include shizukaol A (164), [79] cyclodione (165), [80] and maytenone (166; Scheme 34).…”

“…In folk medicine, the stembark is used to treat body pains, fever, rheumatism, jaundice and malaria by the Ibibios of Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The stembark has been reported to contain triterpene saponin (Tchivounda et al, 1990a(Tchivounda et al, , 1991, cylicodiscus acid, a dihydroxy pentacyclic triterpene carboxylic acid (Tchivounda et al, 1990b) and cyclodione, a dimeric diterpene (Tane et al, 1995). There are however, no references in literature as to the possible antiplasmodial efficacy of the stembark either in vitro or in vivo.…”

“…The ethanolic stem bark extract of C. gabunensis shows schizontocidal activity in both early and established Plasmodium berghei infections in mice, with treatment showing an improved survival time comparable to that of chloroquine (Okokon et al, 2006). To date, several phytochemical studies on this plant have indicated the presence of triterpenes such as cylicodiscic acid (Tchivounda et al, 1990), triterpenoid saponins (Mkounga et al, 2010;Tchivounda et al, 1991;Tene et al, 2011) and cyclodione (Tane et al, 1995). However, the antimalarial compounds in the plant extract are still unknown.…”
