Cyclodextrin-linked alginate beads as supporting materials for Sphingomonas cloacae, a nonylphenol degrading bacteria

Abstract: Calcium alginate beads covalently linked with -cyclodextrin (-CD-alginate beads) were prepared and examined for their ability to serve as a supporting matrix for bacterial degradation of nonylphenol, an endocrine disruptor. Column chromatographic experiment using -CD-alginate beads with diameter of 657 ± 82 m and with degree of CD substitution of 0.16 showed a strong affinity for nonylphenol adsorption. Although addition of -CD (2.7-27 mM) to the culture broth of Sphingomonas cloacae retarded nonylphenol … Show more

“…The rough and approximately porous surface characteristics of alginate beads shown in SEM pictures is in good agreement with the other studies which can be explained by the egg-box structure of calcium alginate beads. [21][22][23][24] Alginate is able to form gel by reaction with divalent cations such as Ca 2+ . Gelation of alginate is mainly achieved by the exchange of Na + from the guluronic acids with Ca 2+ , and stacking of these guluronic groups to form the characteristic egg-box structure.…”

“…In the presence of Ca 2+ ions, the CD-conjugated alg formed stable hydrogel MS, which were investigated as encapsulation material for the bacteria Sphingomonas cloacae in the context of the degradation of nonylphenol, which is an organic pollutant found in aquatic environment as a result of industrial surfactant biodegradation. The degrading ability of Sphingomonas cloacae toward nonylphenol as well as bacterial cell adhesion within the hydrogel matrix were superior to pure alg-MS in CD-conjugated alg-MS [110].…”
