The urban natural environment provides numerous benefits, including augmenting the aesthetic appeal of urban landscapes and improving mental wellbeing. While diverse methods have been used to evaluate urban greenery, the assessment of eye-level greenness visibility using street-view level images is emerging due to its greater compatibility with human perception. Many existing studies predominantly rely on proprietary street view images provider such as Google Street View (GSV) data; the usage restrictions and lack of alignment with FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) principles present challenges in using proprietary images at scale. Therefore, incorporating Volunteered Street View Imagery (VSVI) platforms, such as Mapillary, is emerging as a promising alternative. In this study, we present a scalable and reproducible methodological framework for utilising Mapillary images for Green View Index (GVI) assessment using image segmentation approach and evaluate the completeness and usefulness of such data in diverse geographical contexts, including seven cities (i.e., Amsterdam, City of Melbourne, Dhaka, Kampala, Mexico City, Seattle, and Tel Aviv). We also evaluate the use of globally available satellite-based vegetation indices (e.g., Normalised Difference Vegetation Index-NDVI) to estimate GVI in locations where street-view images are unavailable. Our approach demonstrates the applicability of Mapillary data for GVI assessments, although revelling considerable disparities in image availability and usability between cities located in developed and developing countries. We also identified that the NDVI could be used effectively to estimate GVI values in locations where direct street-level imagery is limited. Additionally, the analysis reveals notable differences in greenness visibility across cities, particularly in high-density, lower-income cities in Africa and South Asia, compared to low-density, high-income cities in the USA and Europe.

There is clear evidence of the effects of air pollution on health. In this paper, we present an innovative application designed to assess Air Quality (AQ) exposure based on the World Health Organization’s AQ Guidelines, analysing pollutants and their concentrations independently. Our aim is to provide this information to citizens based on their health profile (medical history or requirements) before and during outdoor trips of their choice, both walking and cycling, empowering them to proactively make informed personal decisions about their route choices and identifying potentially unhealthy travel environments. For this purpose, we have access to official data from AQ monitoring stations that are updated periodically every 10 min. Then, by using spatial interpolation techniques (with Ordinary Kriging), we estimate each pollutant over a grid superimposed on the city map. Once the pollutants have been mapped on each route, they are analysed in order to consider the different alternatives for deciding and planning changes in speed or trajectory. We evaluated the application in the city of Valencia (Spain) as a use case under different scenarios, and showed the results to assess exposure to pollution on the routes of citizens.

Towards sustainable urban transport—Political agenda formation and policy windows in Helsinki, Oslo, and Stockholm

This paper examines the development of urban transport political agendas in three Nordic capital cities, Helsinki, Oslo, and Stockholm, that strive towards urban sustainability. Utilising the Multiple Streams framework as a basis for analysis, an overview of local problems, policy solutions, and politics that have characterised transport systems and the related policy development processes over time is constructed. The attention is then drawn towards the points in time where the streams connect, and policy windows occur, to detect formative changes and their enablers towards sustainability. The data consists of 18 semi‐structured expert interviews, conducted amongst municipal policymakers and planners. The results reveal several policy windows that have transformed the local transport systems towards sustainability and an increasingly people‐oriented approach. The relevance of global climate change awareness, international planning trends for liveability and cycling, public pressure, individual political decisions, and establishment of modal hierarchy is evident across the case cities, while car traffic regulation is politically challenging and addressed through very different means at very different times. The findings of this paper outline diverse ways for advancing sustainability in local policy development but also detect methods for politically halting the process.
