Cyclists’ exposure to air pollution, noise, and greenery: a population-level spatial analysis approach

Abstract: Urban travel exposes people to a range of environmental qualities with significant health and wellbeing impacts. Nevertheless, the understanding of travel-related environmental exposure has remained limited. Here, we present a novel approach for population-level assessment of multiple environmental exposure for active travel. It enables analyses of (1) urban scale exposure variation, (2) alternative routes’ potential to improve exposure levels per exposure type, and (3) by combining multiple exposures. We demo… Show more

“…Our estimated GVI score on each street segment clearly indicates the street to prioritise for such interventions. Furthermore, our results can be valuable for transport planning; for instance, our GVI values can be integrated within transport routing modelling to evaluate and select greener routes for various trips (Willberg et al, 2023;Staves et al, 2023). In addition to these practical implications, our empirical results can also aid in formulating urban greening policies based on cities in different geographic contexts.…”

“…In [14], the authors present a population-based assessment, carried out in Helsinki (Finland), of multiple environmental exposures for active commuting, allowing urban-scale exposure analyses to inform exposure levels. It highlights that cyclists have more noise exposure and pollution, which exceed healthy thresholds.…”
