A new pyroclastic stratigraphy is presented for the island of Ischia, Italy, for the period ∼75-50 ka BP. The data indicate that this period bore witness to the largest eruptions recorded on the island and that it was considerably more volcanically active than previously thought. Numerous vents were probably active during this period. The deposits of at least 10 explosive phonolite to basaltictrachyandesite eruptions are described and interpreted. They record a diverse range of explosive volcanic activity including voluminous fountain-fed ignimbrite eruptions, fallout from sustained eruption columns, block-and-ash flows, and phreatomagmatic eruptions. Previously unknown eruptions have been recognised for the first time on the island. Several of the eruptions produced pyroclastic density currents that covered the whole island as well as the neighbouring island of Procida and parts of the mainland. The morphology of Ischia was significantly different to that seen today, with edifices to the south and west and a submerged depression in the centre. The largest volcanic event, the Monte Epomeo Green Tuff (MEGT) resulted in caldera collapse across all or part of the island. It is shown to comprise at least two thick intracaldera ignimbrite flowunits, separated by volcaniclastic sediments that were deposited during a pause in the eruption. Extracaldera deposits of the MEGT include a pumice fall deposit emplaced during the opening phases of the eruption, a widespread lithic lag breccia outcropping across much of Ischia and Procida, and a distal ignimbrite in south-west Campi Flegrei. During this period the style and magnitude of volcanism was dictated by the dynamics of a large differentiated magma chamber, which was partially destroyed during the MEGT eruption. This contrasts with the small-volume Holocene and historical effusive and explosive activity on Ischia, the timing and distribution of which has been controlled by the resurgence of the Monte Epomeo block. The new data contribute to a clearer understanding of the long-term volcanic and magmatic evolution of Ischia.

It defines the best plant option and finally returns the actual available power. a r t i c l e i n f o b s t r a c tThe paper proposes a method to evaluate the potential for electric power production at any site of possible geothermal interest. Accounting for geological data of the reservoirs, the method allows the computation of the available electrical power of the investigated site. Electrical energy production from geothermal sources is realized through different techniques, such as single flash and double flash, dry steam, and binary ORC plants. The technique chosen to be the most productive is determined by analyzing a specific range of geofluid properties, mainly temperature and pressure. Moreover, each plant typology has a global efficiency that may be correlated to geofluid enthalpy by empiric relations available in literature. The proposed evaluation method brings together all these correlations, yielding the power availability from a geosource, once its temperature and pressure are known. The method takes as input the geofluid available flow rate, its pressure, temperature and non-condensable gas content. It defines the best plant option from these parameters, calculates its global efficiency and finally returns the actual available power. For sites of geothermic interest, such as the volcanic island of Ischia in Southern Italy, the results of the application of this new method clearly highlight the most suitable zones for power plants installations.

The Island of Ischia is a densely populated, active volcanic island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, approximately 30km WSW from the city of Naples in Southern Italy. The Island is a debris-flow prone area due to its steep slopes covered by loose volcanic lithologies, and the whole territory is vulnerable to such phenomena due to an unregulated urbanization. On April 30th 2006, following several hours of rainfall, four soil slips were triggered on the slopes of Mt. Vezzi (about 400ma.s.l.) in the SE portion of the island. The soil slips changed quickly into debris flows that reached the inhabited at the foot of the hill. In spite of their limited size, the landslides caused four victims and destroyed several buildings, forcing the evacuation of 250 inhabitants. This paper presents the analysis of the triggering and propagation phase of the phenomena. In particular, to model the triggering conditions, a finite element analysis was used to reconstruct the fluctuations in pore water pressure during the storm in transient conditions. The limit equilibrium (Morgenstern and Price, 1965) slope-stability method was then applied using the temporal pore water pressure distributions derived from the seepage analysis. The dynamic modeling of the propagation phase was carried out by means of two dynamic codes DAN-W and FLO2D, with the aim of evaluating the residual hazard linked to other potential debris flows recognized in the same area. The model calibration was based on the thickness and areal extension of the deposits, on flow velocity and runout. The results have been subsequently compared to adopt a combined approach to the modeling. Once the DAN-W and FLO2D models satisfactorily reproduced the 30th April events, the simulations were extended to a larger area, whose susceptibility to future landslide events has been determined through a detailed geomorphological survey and a following GIS analysis. Several scenarios related to these potential events were used to estimate the inundation areas, flow velocities, and deposit thicknesses.
