Cyclic prefixing or zero padding for wireless multicarrier transmissions?

Abstract: Zero padding (ZP) of multicarrier transmissions has recently been proposed as an appealing alternative to the traditional cyclic prefix (CP) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to ensure symbol recovery regardless of the channel zero locations. In this paper, both systems are studied to delineate their relative merits in wireless systems where channel knowledge is not available at the transmitter. Two novel equalizers are developed for ZP-OFDM to tradeoff performance with implementation complexit… Show more

“…However, overlap-adding operation incurs information loss: it folds a received block that is a linear convolution of the input and the channel, into a shorter block that corresponds to a circular convolution of the input and the channel. This fact has been recognized in [4], and other forms of receivers have been developed to improve the system performance.…”

“…Both OFDM and SC transmission with FDE (SC-FDE) can be realised using the cyclic prefixing (CP) technique at the cost of an extra power overhead. Recently, zero padding (ZP) has also been studied as an alternative to CP in both OFDM and SC systems [4][5][6]. The advantages of OFDM-ZP over OFDM-CP have been discussed in Reference [6] for single-user systems with non-iterative detectors.…”
