Cycle Tempo Power Simulation of the Variations in Heat Source Temperatures for an Organic Rankine Cycle Power Plant using R-134A Working Fluid

Abstract: The focus of this study is an experiment and simulation of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system to produce electricity. The experimental equipment consisted of four main components: fluid pumps (for refrigerant and water); a condenser as a heat exchanger to condense the working fluid; an evaporator (boiler) as a heat exchanger to evaporate the refrigerant; and an expander (turbine) as a driver to produce electricity. The expander was a modification of a scroll air conditioning (AC) compressor, with a capacity… Show more

“…The thermodynamic system analysis of the proposed COGES design was carried out using the Cycle-Tempo application to obtain the output power generation and total efficiency of the design system. Cycle-Tempo is commercial software to analyze and optimize the thermodynamics of the energy system (Asimptote, 2023), which includes a combined cycle and organic Rankine cycle (Muslim et al, 2019). The equation used in this application is based on the thermodynamic process of the law of energy balance.…”

“…The pressurized steam is then fed into the turbine, where it expands, performing work. The exhaust steam is cooled and condensed, the condensate enters the pump, and the cycle is closed (Muslim et al, 2019). A regenerative heat exchanger is often used in Rankine organic cycle installations.…”

“…It is also possible to use cyclic hydrocarbons, for example, cyclopentane and cyclohexane, as well as butene, isobutene, etc. In scientific papers (Scagnolatto, Cabezas-Gómez, and Tibiriçá, 2021;Muslim et al, 2019;Artemenko, 2014;Wang et al, 2013;Saleh et al, 2007), the issue of a working fluid selection, as well as the influence of various factors on the cycle efficiency, has been studied in detail.…”

“…The simulation results show the isentropic power and efficiency of each different configuration. Raghulnath et al, [20] and Muslim et al, [21] developed a variation of the Cycle-Tempo model of the Organic Rankine Cycle. Research conducted by Rajeev et al, [22], namely energy and exergy analysis at a 3x500MW power plant using Cycle-Tempo software, got the largest validation error in his research at 9.07%.…”
