Baseline Tailor is an innovative web application for users of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework and Special Publication (SP) 800-53. Baseline Tailor makes the information in these widely referenced publications easily accessible to both security professionals and downstream software by addressing the following barriers: Complexity of the rules for tailoring SP 800-53 security controls, Differences in the Framework's and SP 800-53 organizational approach, and Lack of a computer-readable data format for representing tailored security controls. The NIST Engineering Laboratory’s Cybersecurity for Smart Manufacturing Systems project used Baseline Tailor to help develop a Cybersecurity Framework profile for the manufacturing environment. This “manufacturing profile” uses guidance from NIST SP 800-53 and from NIST SP 800-82 Guide to Industrial Control Systems Security to provide manufacturers with a roadmap for reducing cybersecurity risk.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has constructed a testbed to measure the performance impact of cybersecurity technologies on Industrial Control Systems (ICS). The testbed was chosen to support the implementation of the Cybersecurity Framework Manufacturing Profile: a voluntary, risk-based approach for managing cybersecurity activities and reducing cyber risk to manufacturing systems. This report focuses on the Collaborative Robotics System, one of the two manufacturing systems within the testbed. A methodology for implementation of technical solutions to meet the Profile language is described, as well as a comprehensive review of the testbed measurement systems, and the comparative analysis procedures used for identifying performance impacts. Finally, an example comparative analysis is performed and the characterization of the workcell is discussed.

The next generation of smart manufacturing systems will incorporate various recent enabling technologies. These technologies will aid in ushering the era of the fourth industrial revolution. They will make the supply chain and the product lifecycle of the manufacturing system efficient, decentralized, and well-connected. However, these technologies have various security issues and, when integrated in the supply chain and the product lifecycle of manufacturing systems, can pose various challenges for maintaining the security requirements such as confidentiality, integrity, and availability. In this paper, we will present the various trends and advances in the security of the supply chain and product lifecycle of the manufacturing system while highlighting the roles played by the major enabling components of Industry 4.0.
