Cybergenetic control of microbial community composition

Abstract: The use of bacterial communities in bioproduction instead of monocultures has potential advantages including increased productivity through division of labour, ability to utilise cheaper substrates, and robustness against perturbations. A key challenge in the application of engineered bacterial communities is the ability to reliably control the composition of the community in terms of its constituent species. This is crucial to prevent faster growing species from outcompeting others with a lower relative fitne… Show more

“…This section briefly introduces the concept of closed-loop control, discusses elements of closed-loop control concerning microbiomes, and emphasizes model-based control strategies for microbiomes with examples from biotechnology. Further information on this topic can be found in the review by Lee and Steel [243].…”

“…This distribution of labor is augmented by substrate cross-feeding and overcomes the challenges of population instability and poor control over strain composition ( Fig. 6c ; Chung et al., 2013 ; Sgobba & Wendisch, 2020 ; Duncker et al., 2021 ; Kang et al., 2022 ; T. A. Lee & Steel, 2022 ; X. Li et al., 2022 ). The initial inoculum ratio of selective sugar utilization strains as well as periodic pulsing of select carbon sources are especially facile tools with which to control metabolic product titers (H. Zhang et al., 2015 ).…”
