Cyberbullying in Schools

Abstract

Technology has revolutionized not only the ways in which people communicate with one another but also the forms that bullying may take. Whereas formerly most bullying occurred at school during the school day, with the advent of cyberbullying, bullying may occur anytime, using the Internet or cellphone. After discussing the wired culture in which youth today are growing up, this chapter examines this relatively new form of bullying. The chapter looks first at how cyberbullying is typically defined and then examines prevalence rates and consequences of cyberbullying. The chapter concludes with an examination of prevention and intervention programs that schools can use to most effectively decrease the incidence of cyberbullying.
