Cyber-security for Mobile Service Robots – Challenges for Cyber-physical System Safety

Abstract: A review of the known and an indication of the new threats for cyber-physical robotic systems, caused by cybernetic attacks, serves, in this paper, as a basis for the analysis of the known methods relied upon to detect and mitigate consequences of such attacks. A particular emphasis is placed on threats specific for cyber-physical systems, as they are a feature distinguishing these systems from their traditional Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) counterparts. Based on the review of literature and… Show more

“…In recent years, intensive research has been carried out on protecting cyber-physical systems, especially those built with service robots and wireless sensors [2,[13][14][15]. Due to the complex control and decision mechanisms, the need for real-time processing of measurement data and operational decision making in the design and development of secure CPSs is a non-trivial challenge.…”

“…The consequences of an attack can be much more significant than in typical computer systems. Therefore, robotic security adds a dimension of physical interaction with humans and other machines to the requirements of general cybersecurity [8,13,16].…”

“…DDoS is the most typical [40]. The cloud robot will cease operations if a DDoS attack is launched against its server, which could cause a significant loss [41]. When building service robots [42], secure coding techniques ought to be applied to minimize the risk of vulnerabilities.…”

“…This paper shows how embodied agents facilitate the design and implementation of a HCI to a cybersecurity data visualisation system. Cybersecurity refers to a set of techniques, tools, practices and controls designed to protect the integrity of computer networks, programs, data and complex cyber-physical systems [3] against cyber-attacks, damage or unauthorised access. The goal is to secure the network infrastructure used by state agencies, private corporations and individual users against cyber terrorism, cyber crime and cyber war.…”
