Abstract-Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are highly multidisciplinary systems that involve disciplines such as embedded computing, control theory and communication technology. Even though building this kind of systems is a challenging task, its introduction during the last courses of computer science and engineering university degrees has proven very valuable to teach students to deal with complexity. This paper presents an educational experience in the field of Computer Science at the University College of Engineering of Vitoria-Gasteiz (UPV/EHU). As part of an elective course, students had to design and develop an Android-based remote control system for teleoperating an educative mobile robot controlled by means of a Raspberry Pi. They had to apply and combine concepts learnt in previous disciplines (such as programming, operating systems or communication networks), reinforcing already acquired skills, as well as gaining other generic skills demanded in their future professional career, such as: (1) effectively working in groups, (2) integrating different technologies, (3) proactive problem solving, or (4) coping with system complexity.

Cyber physical systems (CPSs) by definition involve design constraints addressing the computation and communication necessary to control physical systems. These systems have been modeled using domain specific modeling languages, but some limitations exist in the continued application of such a modeling approach to more complex, or safety-critical, systems. Specifically, it is well known how to formulate constraints in a domain-specific modeling language in order to prevent users from building invalid structures, but existing constraint-based techniques do not take into consideration design requirements that may require analysis in the physical domain (i.e. dynamic constraints). Those analysis results, when interpreted by a domain expert, can inform changes to the model: unfortunately, this "by hand" process does not scale. This paper presents an approach to automate the process of evolving models based on dynamic constraints that are not structurally enforceable into the modeling of CPSs. This new methodology-called dynamic constraint feedback (DCF)-is described herein and demonstrated with specific examples derived from the domain of data adaptable reconfigurable embedded systems (DARES). In DCF, expert blocks are integrated with a modeling language to perform dynamic constraint analysis on system models. The results from these analyses are then used to generate model transformations that can be applied to the source models.

Abstract-Cyber-PhysicalSystems (CPS) integrate embedded computers that control physical processes. Application domains for CPS may be found in intelligent buildings, healthcare, transportation and factory automation, among many others. Typically, they are based on low profile computing elements, such as sensors and actuators that must communicate to carry out complex tasks. They must address certain issues such as managing available resources and service redundancy, as well as solving heterogeneity. In particular, managing communication issues can be relatively complex. In this scenario, middleware technologies can help developers in the design of state-of-the-art CPS. This work describes the design principles of CPS that require cooperation. More specifically, it presents a generic family of logical information exchange and cooperation topologies capable of adapting dynamically to changes in the environment. These topologies may be implemented on top of several middleware specifications as a means for managing distributed resources and service redundancy of CPS at run-time.
