The rising interest in harmful cyanoprokaryote blooms promotes an increase of phycological and ecological research on potentially toxic species and their hazardous substances. The present study aimed to identify the main microcystin (MC) producers and their contribution to the phytoplankton of shallow waterbodies in Bulgaria, applying different methods. The sampling was performed in August 2019 in nine lakes and reservoirs, two of which (reservoirs Kriva Reka and Izvornik 2) were studied for the first time. The high contribution of cyanoprokaryotes to the total species composition and phytoplankton abundance was proved by light microscopic (LM) observations and HPLC analysis of marker pigments. The LM identification of potential MC-producers was supported by PCR amplification of mcyE and mcyB genes. The MCs amounts, detected by HPLC-DAD, varied by sites with a range from undetectable concentrations to 0.46 µg L−1 with only one recorded variant, namely MC-LR. It was found only in the reservoirs Mandra and Durankulak, while toxigenic MC-strains were obtained by PCR from five more waterbodies. Both LM and PCR demonstrated that the MC-producers were Microcystis aeruginosa and M. wesenbergii, despite their occurrence in low amounts (<0.5–5% of the total biomass) when filamentous cyanoprokaryotes dominated.

Phytoplankton blooms have caused many serious public safety incidents and eco-environmental problems worldwide and became a focus issue for research. Accurate and rapid monitoring of phytoplankton blooms is critical for forecasting, treating, and management. With the advantages of large spatial coverage and high temporal resolution, remote sensing has been widely used to monitor phytoplankton blooms. Numerous advances have been made in the remote sensing of phytoplankton blooms, biomass, and phenology over the past several decades. To fully understand the development history, research hotspots, and future trends of remote-sensing technology in the study of phytoplankton blooms, we conducted a comprehensive review to systematically analyze the research trends in the remote sensing of phytoplankton blooms through bibliometrics. Our findings showed that research on the use of remote-sensing technology in this field increased substantially in the past 30 years. “Oceanography,” “Environmental Sciences,” and “Remote Sensing” are the most popular subject categories. Remote Sensing of Environment, Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, and International Journal of Remote Sensing were the journals with the most published articles. The results of the analysis of international influence and cooperation showed that the United States had the greatest influence in this field and that the cooperation between China and the United States was the closest. The Chinese Academy of Sciences published the largest number of papers, reaching 542 articles. Keyword and topic analysis results showed that “phytoplankton,” “chlorophyll,” and “ocean” were the most frequently occurring keywords, while “eutrophication management and monitoring,” “climate change,” “lakes,” and “remote-sensing algorithms” were the most popular research topics in recent years. Researchers are now paying increasing attention to the phenological response of phytoplankton under the conditions of climate change and the application of new remote-sensing methods. With the development of new remote-sensing technology and the expansion of phytoplankton research, future research should focus on (1) accurate observation of phytoplankton blooms; (2) the traits of phytoplankton blooms; and (3) the drivers, early warning, and management of phytoplankton blooms. In addition, we discuss the future challenges and opportunities in the use of remote sensing in phytoplankton blooms. Our review will promote a deeper and wider understanding of the field.

Climate Change Impacts on Water Temperatures in Urban Lakes: Implications for the Growth of Blue Green Algae in Fairy Lake

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are photosynthetic bacteria that play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems and are susceptible to changes in temperature. Hence, as global temperatures rise due to climate change, some Cyanobacterial species will thrive in warmer temperatures, which will result in increased blooms during the growing season. The MIKE-3 model is calibrated to existing (2022) conditions and is used to assess the impact of the RCP 4.5 scenario for the year 2050 in Fairy Lake (a shallow urban lake in Ontario). The simulations projected indicate that in 2050, in the central parts of Fairy Lake’s central basin, water temperatures will be above 20 °C for 2281 h compared to 2060 h in 2022. This situation indicates there will be a 10.7% increase in the duration of Cyanobacteria blooms in the central area of Fairy Lake. Similarly, in the northern area of Fairy Lake, the MIKE-3 model results indicate that surface temperature durations above 20 °C will increase from 1628 h to 2275 h for the year 2050, resulting in an additional 647 h of increased temperatures at the surface under RCP 4.5 scenario conditions. This situation indicates there will be a 39.7% increase in the duration of Cyanobacteria blooms in the northern portion of Fairy Lake. These modeling conditions indicate there will be significantly more habitat amenable to Cyanobacteria growth when surface water temperatures are above 20 °C, indicating substantial increases in the available growth time of Cyanobacteria due to climate change, all of which translate to major concerns caused by climate change.
