Abstract: Background: Macrophage heterogeneity plays an increasing role in the study of vascular inflammatory responses. The CXCL4-induced monocyte/macrophage phenotype has previously been implicated with atherosclerotic plaque destabilization, a key process preceding plaque rupture.
