In this study, some cutting and energy properties of canes of local grapes varieties Okuzgozu (Vitis vinifera L. cv.) were determined depend on knife type, cutting angle and cutting speed during the spring pruning in 2018. The canes of grapes were obtained from a commercial farm in the Diyarbakir province. Cutting properties were measured by a material testing machine. According to test results, the significant differences were found between the knives types at 1 % probability level. The best results were determined at the flat knife knife type, followed by serrated 2 and serrated 1, respectively. While the lowest cutting force and cutting strength values were obtained at flat type (knife edge flat) as 234.50 N, 8.299 MPa, 1.783 J and 0.06307 J mm-2 respectively, the highest values cutting forces, cutting strength, cutting energy and specific cutting energy were obtained at serrated type 1 (knife edge thin) knife as 303.8 N, 10.75 MPa, 2.136 J and 0.075610 J mm-2 respectively. The cutting force and energy values decreased with increasing knife-cutting angle from 0° to 40°. The maximum cutting force, cutting strength, cutting energy and specific cutting energy were observed at 0° cutting angle as 319.3 N, 11.30 MPa, 2.393 N and 0.08464 J mm-2 respectively. The effect of the knife loading speed on the cutting forces, cutting strength, cutting energy and specific cutting energy were found significant statistically (p<0.01). The lowest cutting force, cutting strength, cutting energy and specific cutting energy were obtained at the 1 m s-1 as 246.1 N, 8.705 MPa, 1.273 J and 0.04502 J mm-1 , respectively.

Mechanical properties of the horticultural products play an important role in improving the products quality and storage life after harvesting and also reducing product waste. Recently, using organic fertilizers has increasing trend for producing high‐quality products as well as improvement of soil quality. Two of the best options to produce organic material and sustainability of agricultural production are vermicompost and sheep manure. The present study relied on determination of mechanical properties through pressure and shear tests. Vermicompost and sheep manure were used separately to fertilize the soil. After planting tomato seeds and harvesting, tomato fruits were analyzed by a universal test machine. The results showed that vermicompost was a better fertilizer than sheep manure due to its more appropriate carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), acidity, and salinity. Also, in the pressure test, the maximum force required for bruise of tomato produced with vermicompost (41.5N) was more than that of control sample (no fertilizer) and sheep manure. In the shearing test, the maximum force required for shearing tomato produced with vermicompost (58.60 N) was lower than that of control sample (no fertilizer) and sheep manure. The findings of this study can be used to reduce the amount of waste at different stages of tomato production and supply including the design and optimization of processing and transportation equipment.

The absence of scalable and economically viable alternatives for managing residues coupled with shorter planting window and growing labour shortages and energy prices requires a sustainable solution for the crop residue management in northern India. As per “Need of the Hour”, the present research work focused on physical, mechanical, and morphological characterizations of wheat, which will help in further design of the low-cost straw combine. For this purpose, two varieties of wheat (HD-2967 and WH-1105) were used for the present study, as these are the prevalent varieties of Haryana state. The straw specimens were collected at harvesting period from a farmer’s field, which is located at a longitude of 75.64 and latitude of 29.15. The physical characterization of the crops was conducted on the basis of diameter, length, and thickness of nodes of straws. In contrast, the mechanical characterizations was performed by calculating the tensile and shear strength of the straws. The morphological analysis was performed by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The energy dispersive spectroscopy was performed to analyse the presence of constituting elements of straw. The statistical analysis showed that moisture content in the straw had a significant effect on tensile strength and shear strength.
