Owing to their high hardness, fracture toughness and oxidation resistance, tungsten carbide (WC) coatings are extensively deposited on parts that operate in demanding applications, necessitating wear, erosion, and corrosion resistance. The application of thick and hard WC coatings has an inevitable effect on the original dimensions of the parts, affecting the geometrical tolerances and surface roughness. The capability of achieving a sub-micron surface finish and adhere to tight geometrical tolerances accurately and repeatably is an important requirement, particularly with components that operate in high-precision sliding motion. Meeting such requirements through conventional surface finishing methods, however, can be challenging due to the superior mechanical and tribological properties of WC coatings. A brief review into the synthesis techniques of cemented and binderless WC coatings is presented together with a comprehensive review into the available techniques which are used to surface finish WC-based coatings with reference to their fundamental mechanisms and capabilities to process parts with intricate and internal features. The binderless WC/W coating considered in this work is deposited through chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and unlike traditional cemented carbide coatings, it has a homogenous coating structure. This distinctive characteristic has the potential of eliminating key issues commonly encountered with machining and finishing of WC-based coatings. Here, six contact and non-contact surface finishing techniques, include diamond turning, precision grinding, superfinishing, vibratory polishing, electrical discharge machining, and electropolishing are discussed along with their current use in industry and limitations. Key challenges in the field are highlighted and potential directions for future investigation, particularly on binderless WC coatings, are proposed herein.

Conventionally, the evaluation of wear in the cutting tools have been focused mainly on the rake and flank face, but there is little research (consideration) that paid attention to the cutting edge of the tools. The reason for this is the cutting edge is having a large scale chip, a small scale chipping, and edge shape varies complicatedly due to abrasion and wear. Therefore, by extracting its features, a valid technique for evaluating this matters has not been established. That is why this research is carried out to focus on the cutting edge of the tool. In other words, it is an evaluation from the point of the cutting edge that is the line of intersection of rake face and flank face of the cutting tool. The scope involve a quantitative evaluation of its complexity due to the change of this edge line by the fractal dimension. The fractal dimension is a theory that is capable of reasonably indicates the complexity of the shape by a non-integer dimension. Therefore, as a result in the 3-dimensional cylindrical turning using this method, tendency that the fractal dimension of the nose corner part of the cutting edge approached 1.08, and the fractal dimension of the straight part approached 1.12 when the tool reached its end life are obtained.

Sintered tungsten carbide which has high hardness and high heat resistance, has been widely used in molds and dies. Research on the development of a cutting technology for sintered tungsten carbide (sintered WC-Co alloy) has been pursued mainly with the use of a turning process. We focused on building an efficient milling method for sintered tungsten carbide by using diamond-coated ball end tools, and have investigated their basic properties under specific cutting conditions. This study extends our previous work by enhancing cutting distance in the milling of sintered tungsten carbide, especially that with a “fine” WC grain. The surface roughness of cut workpieces is evaluated from the point of view of the quality of surface roughness. A series of cutting experiments under different cutting conditions were carried out, and the possibility of deriving a suitable cutting condition for the ball end milling of sintered tungsten carbide is discussed.
