Cutaneous type adult T‐cell leukemia/lymphoma is a characteristic subtype and includes erythema/papule and nodule/tumor subgroups

Abstract: We first analyzed the genomic profile of cutaneous type adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in an attempt to clarify its clinical and biological characteristics. Genomic gains of 1p, 7q and 18q and loss of 13q were frequently detected. Gain of 1p36.33-32 or loss of 13q33.1-3 indicated poor prognosis. Among cases with generalized lesions, erythema/papule or nodule/tumor cases showed a distinct genomic profile, indicating that these 2 groups were biologically different and developed via different genetic pathw… Show more

“…Electron beam irradiation is also effective for a solitary skin nodules. 13 For cutaneous type ATL, 5,6 generalized erythema/papule and nodule/tumor are usually treated with topical corticosteroids ointment or PUVA therapy, electron beam irradiation or surgical operation or the same multiagents conventional chemotherapy as for lymphoma type ATL, respectively.…”

“…The designation cutaneous type ATL has been proposed to describe patients with the smoldering type in whom the skin is predominantly affected because these patients exhibit a peculiar clinical course and require treatment that is different from the management of smoldering type ATL without skin lesions (the type we designated non‐cutaneous smoldering type). Elsewhere, we reported our genomic profile analysis using the array comparative genomic hybridization method that showed that many patients with cutaneous type ATL manifested chromosomal aberrations, for example gains of 1p, 7q and 18q, and loss of 13q . Based on those findings we compared the HTLV‐1 proviral load in cutaneous and non‐cutaneous smoldering type ATL; we found that it is significantly lower in the cutaneous type.…”

“…6 Adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma with only skin manifestations is sometimes referred to as cutaneous-type ATLL. [7][8][9] The cutaneous type is subdivided into tumoral and erythematopapular subtypes with a prognostic difference: median survival is 19 months in the former subtype and 60 months in the latter. 7 Miyata et al 8 reported that genomic gains of 1p, 7q and 18q and loss of 13q were frequently detected in cutaneous ATLL and a gain of 1p36.33-32 or loss of 13q33.1-3 indicated a poor prognosis.…”
