Cutaneous trichosporosis

Abstract: Of 269 patients with cutaneous trichosporosis a majority of 170 (63.2%) showed the infection as intertrigo in the genitocrural and perianal areas. The predominant symptoms were itching and burning. Trichosporosis has been found to be less common in the other sites. Trichosporosis due to Trichosporon beigelii should be kept in mind as one of the differential diagnosis in cases of genitocrural intertrigo and other cutaneous infections by fungi and bacteria in the tropics.

“…Otherwise, this condition appears to be asymptomatic, although the causative fungus can produce serious infections in immunocompromised patients. Cutaneous trichosporonosis and trichosporon onychomycosis have also been reported (82,138). Black piedra is similar to white piedra in that it is a nodular, generally asymptomatic fungal infection of the hair shafts.…”

“…In addition, Trichosporon species have emerged as infrequent but often fatal opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised patients (12,22). Historically, Trichosporon infection has been known to occur as a white piedra in the hair in tropical and subtropical regions (8). Taxonomical investigations of the causative agents were conducted on the basis of new taxonomic criteria (1,5,19,20).…”

“…The species is widely distributed in the environment and has been recovered from normal skin and oral microflorae (31,32). Since disseminated infection caused by T. cutaneum was first reported by Watson and Kallichurum in 1970 (33), reports of this rare disease in immunocompromised patients have been increasing (4,11,12,18,29,32). The clinical picture of disseminated trichosporonosis consists of pneumonia, hepatitis, encephalitis, and septicemia (32).…”
