Cutaneous Onchocerciasis

Abstract: Onchocerciasis was diagnosed when a skin biopsy specimen immersed in saline revealed microfiliariae. The patient was a 22-year-old student from Cameroon, West Africa, complaining of small, recurrent, pruritic papules on his thighs. Chemotherapy with ivermectin, an established antiparasitic agent with newly recognized anti-onchocercal potential, was well tolerated, and microfilariae were not detected in post-therapy skin biopsy specimens. The diagnosis of onchocerciasis should be entertained in individuals retu… Show more

“…Of these, 500,000 have severe visual impairment and 270,000 are blind 1 . Onchocerciasis is caused by the nematode Onchocerca volvulus, which is transmitted by the bite of a black fly (genus Simulium ) near freely flowing waterways 2 . The microfilariae enter the skin and develop into adult forms in the subdermal connective tissue 3 .…”

“…There are smaller foci in Latin America and only one country in Asia, which is Yemen. There is spillover into the United States and Europe, often as a result of poverty and war. Yet, it is often first and persistently evident in the skin as a dermatitis, a finding first described in present‐day Ghana in 1895 by British surgeon John O'Neill .…”
