Cutaneous Infantile Haemangiomas with Intracranial and Intraspinal Involvement: A European Multicentre Experience and Review

Abstract: Infantile haemangiomas are very common benign tumours in the first months of life. They are mostly cutaneous; however, extracutaneous lesions are possible, and occur in very rare cases in the central nervous system. A European multicentre observational retrospective study was conducted in the last 5 years. Seven patients with intracranial or intraspinal infantile haemangiomas were selected and treated with oral propranolol. Propranolol was interrupted after complete or almost complete resolution of infantile h… Show more

“…All CNS lesions responded to treatment and five patients had a complete or almost complete resolution of the cutaneous IHs, thus demonstrating that propranolol can pass the blood-brain barrier. This study suggest that oral propranolol should be considered the first-line approach for intra-CNS IHs to avoid possible complications (Diociaiuti et al, 2020).…”

“…Propranolol is a nonselective beta-blocker that acts on both β-1 and β-2 adrenergic receptors. Oral propranolol actually represents the first-line approach for the pharmacological treatment of IHs, which suppress lesion proliferation [ 29 32 ]. Multiple cutaneous and infantile hepatic hemangiomas respond significantly to propranolol monotherapy in the neonatal period [ 33 ].…”

“…Specifically, “fusion” refers to research on genetic fusion or embryological fusion, focusing on the genetic aspects of investigation [ 86 , 87 ]. Additionally, “epilepsy” pertains to investigations concerning central nervous system infantile hemangiomas, with a specific focus on segmental cutaneous infantile hemangiomas, predominantly occurring on the head, neck, upper trunk, lumbar, or sacral region [ 88 ]. These topics exhibit significant development characterized by high density but relatively low centrality.…”
