Cutaneous HPV16 and p16 Positive Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Brain Metastasis: A Case Report

Abstract: Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is an infiltrative and aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma with basaloid features. Primary skin-derived basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is rare. Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is commonly observed in the oropharyngeal and anogenital regions and is associated with high-risk human papillomavirus. We report a case of primary basaloid squamous cell carcinoma overlying the right scapula with metastasis to the regional lymph nodes and brain despite surgical resection and… Show more

“…Primary cutaneous p16-positive BSCC is a rare and aggressive malignancy. To date there have been eight cases reported in the literature, for which each patient had either nodal or distant metastases at time of diagnosis [ 3 , 5–7 ]. This is the first reported case of p16-positive BSCC of the natal cleft.…”

“…Oncogenic variants of HPV (oncogenes E6 and E7 in particular) inhibit tumor suppressors P53 and Rb, which facilitates unregulated cellular proliferation and tumorigenesis [ 2 ]. HPV-16 in particular is commonly found in anogenital/oropharyngeal BSCC [ 3 ]. HPV-related p16-positive cutaneous disease however is a rare clinical entity [ 4 ]; to date, there have been eight reported cases of cutaneous p16-positive BSCC [ 3 , 5–7 ].…”

“…Primarily found in the mucocutaneous and anogenital regions, BSCC is infrequently encountered as a primary skin malignancy. The existing literature has documented few instances of primary cutaneous BSCC (2)(3)(4)(5). We present here a case of primary cutaneous BSCC of the finger.…”
