Cutaneous Carcinosarcoma: a Clinicopathologic and Immunohistochemical Analysis of 11 Korean Cases

Abstract: BackgroundCutaneous carcinosarcoma is a rare biphasic tumor comprising malignant epithelial and heterologous mesenchymal elements. Data on the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of this tumor in Asian populations are not available. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of cutaneous carcinosarcoma in the Korean population.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the records of 11 patients with cutaneous carcinosarcoma who were diagnosed from 2006… Show more

“…Furthermore, it is the second longest series described in the literature, after two series of 11 patients, one in the European and one in the Korean population. 8,12 The results obtained show a predominance of male gender, advanced age, and photo-exposed areas, all in accordance with previously reported series. Likewise, mostly all cases were pre- the most common subtype of cutaneous CS.…”

“…To our knowledge, only eight series of cutaneous CS have been published in the literature, the largest with 11 patients. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] We present the second study of cutaneous CS in the European population and the second longest series described of this rare tumor. Consequently, the aim of this study was to describe the clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical characteristics of primary cutaneous CS collected in a Spanish tertiary center.…”

“…Of the 47 cases analyzed in a report by Zbacnik et al, there was only one metastatic case of axillary basal cell carcinosarcoma to the lung. Furthermore, a recent study of 11 cutaneous carcinosarcomas by Kwak et al reported three cases of metastases to local lymph nodes, two of which were SCC and one keratoacanthoma; however, they did not identify a significant relationship between primary tumor location or size due to a limited sample [17]. Based on these observations, in our report, Patient A had a more lethal form of carcinosarcoma due to the squamous cell component compared to Patient B with a basaloid component.…”

“…3 Heterologous mesenchymal components are described in both types of carcinosarcomas. 5,7 Localized cutaneous carcinosarcoma have an excellent prognosis with a 99% 5-year relative survival. 8 As compared with stage I (ie, node-negative) uterine carcinosarcomas, the 5-year disease-specific survival is only 47%.…”
