Cutaneous alternariosis in a cat

Abstract: A 10-year-old male domestic shorthaired cat had a chronic, slowly enlarging subcutaneous mass on the right side of its nose. At the time of presentation, the nasal airflow was severely impeded on the affected side. The cat had been treated medically with various drugs. Oral itraconazole had been the most effective in reducing the size of the mass, but had caused hepatotoxicity and had to be withdrawn. The mass was finally removed surgically, and a diagnosis of granulomatous cellulitis caused by Alternaria alte… Show more

“…24 The bioavailability of itraconazole is affected by variations in diet and gastric pH, 25 and the drug has been associated with various adverse effects including anorexia (≤ 15% of dogs), 26 gastrointestinal disturbance, 25 and rare cases of hepatotoxicosis. 25,27 Fluconazole has been suggested as the treatment of choice for various CNS fungal infections in dogs. 8,9 However, voriconazole has a broader spectrum than fluconazole and itraconazole and is reported to be 50 to 100 times as potent against certain fungal species and also to have excellent bioavailability and ability in penetrating the brain and CSF.…”

“…However a special case exists for the use of alternariosis in animals for the reasons mentioned here. All 12 previous feline cases with this disease pattern reported in the UK literature have been caused by Alternaria 5–7 . The term alternariosis has been used previously in the veterinary scientific literature 5 .…”

“…In Europe, there have been a number of case studies describing phaeohyphomycotic infection by Alternaria spp. (UK) 5–7 and the Netherlands 8 , Exophiala and Ulocladium (UK) 9,10 and a variety of other organisms from Spain 11 and Italy 12,13 . Although well recognized, there have been only a few reports of dermatophytic pseudomycetoma, usually in Persian cats 14,15 …”
