Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) is an ethernet-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) service that provides multipoint-to-multipoint Layer 2 VPN service, where each site is geographically dispersed across a Wide Area Network (WAN). The adaptability and scalability of VPLS are limited despite the fact that they provide a flexible solution for connecting geographically dispersed sites. Furthermore, the construction of tunnels connecting customer locations that are separated by great distances adds a substantial amount of latency to the user traffic transportation. To address these issues, a novel Hierarchical VPLS (H-VPLS) architecture has been developed using 802.1Q tunneling (also known as Q-in-Q) on high-speed and commodity routers to satisfy the additional requirements of new VPLS applications. The Vector Packet Processing (VPP) performs as the router’s data plane, and FRRouting (FRR), an open-source network routing software suite, acts as the router’s control plane. The router is designed to seamlessly forward VPLS packets using the Request For Comments (RFCs) 4762, 4446, 4447, 4448, and 4385 from The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) integrated with VPP. In addition, the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) is used for Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Pseudo-Wire (PW) signaling in FRR. The proposed mechanism has been implemented on a software-based router in the Linux environment and tested for its functionality, signaling, and control plane processes. The router is also implemented on commodity hardware for testing the functionality of VPLS in the real world. Finally, the analysis of the results verifies the efficiency of the proposed mechanism in terms of throughput, latency, and packet loss ratio.

Multifractal modeling generalizes the existing traffic models and is believed to be appropriate to describe the characteristics of traffic flows of modern communication networks. This thesis investigates some novel approaches for bandwidth allocation, traffic prediction and byte loss probability estimation, by considering the multifractal characteristics of the network traffic. Firstly, a Wavelet based Multifractal Model (WMM) is proposed. Taking into account the properties of this multifractal model, we derive the global scaling parameter, the autocorrelation function and the effective bandwidth for multifractal processes. The real time updating capacity of the WMM in connection with our effective bandwidth proposal allows us to develop an algorithm for adaptive effective bandwidth estimation. Then, through this algorithm, an adaptive bandwidth provisioning scheme is introduced. In this work, we also study a prediction-based bandwidth allocation case. For this end, we develop an adaptive fuzzy predictor, which is incorporated into a novel bandwidth allocation scheme. The proposed adaptive fuzzy predictor makes use of orthonormal basis functions based on the properties of the WMM. Additionally, we derive an analytical expression for the byte loss probability estimation assuming that the traffic obeys the MMW. Besides, a more complete characterization of the queuing behavior is carried out through the estimation of the bounds for the loss probability and mean queue length in buffer in terms of the WMM based effective bandwidth. Finally, an admission control scheme is presented that uses the WMM based effective envelope derived through the statistical network calculus, guaranteeing that the admitted flows simultaneously attend the loss and delay requirements. The computer simulation results confirm the relevance of the presented proposals.

The issue of providing a mobile virtual private network (MVPN) service by a cellular network is addressed in this study. The main focus of this study is on two aspects of MVPN handling: a multicast transmission, and location management of the MVPN members. Virtual private networks (VPNs) already exist in wired networks. The growing number of mobile users increases the demand for mobile services. It is expected that future wireless networks will have to provide wireless internet services, and in particular, to support MVPNs. In order to maintain an MVPN service offering, the system must support an efficient information delivery to the MVPN members. In order to achieve this goal, the physical locations of the MVPN members must be known to the system. In this study, we present methods to efficiently route and transmit information to the MVPN members, without affecting the quality of the personal service provided to each and every MVPN member. It is shown that the wireless MVPN bandwidth requirement is significantly less than the equivalent bandwidth required by a wired VPN. The offered bandwidth utilization is significantly better than the efficiency of IP-based multicast transmission in the Internet, and the proposed IP-based multicast transmission in cellular networks.
