Curricular Framing of the Undergraduate Immunology Classroom

Abstract: Immunology education has historically been delivered at the graduate level. Calls for reform in biology education and increased workforce demand for individuals trained in immunology have spurred efforts to examine immunology education at the undergraduate level. The Undergraduate Immunology Education Consortium, a newly formed international group of immunology educators representing diverse institutions, is contributing to this effort through the development of curricular resources and student learning outcom… Show more

“…ly/3cmdd4X and Table 1). 4,5 This alignment of immunological concepts with general concepts in life science education allows educators from outside of the immunological niche to appreciate the interdisciplinary connections and make those connections obvious to students by using examples of immunological processes. For instance, the core concept of "Evolution" can be aligned with the germinal center B cell reaction, a process that features molecular selection associate professor Frostburg State University, Frostburg, MD and adaptation to create the most effective antibody response.…”

“…With this concept-focused approach, immunology-focused content can be provided earlier in a program of study in addition to typical upper-level undergraduate biology courses. A community-based approach to develop such a framework for immunology is currently under works by the ImmunoReach Research Coordination Network (RCN) ( 32 ; unpublished data).…”
