Currents Status, Challenges, and Future Directions in Identifying Critical Source Areas for Non-Point Source Pollution in Canadian Conditions

Abstract: Non-point source (NPS) pollution is an important problem that has been threatening freshwater resources throughout the world. Best Management Practices (BMPs) can reduce NPS pollution delivery to receiving waters. For economic reasons, BMPs should be placed at critical source areas (CSAs), which are the areas contributing most of the NPS pollution. The CSAs are the areas in a watershed where source coincides with transport factors, such as runoff, erosion, subsurface flow, and channel processes. Methods rangin… Show more

“…The water quality is endangered by both point and non-point source pollution. Compared to point-sources that have currently been effectively managed, the non-point source pollutants from various land-use types, mostly agriculture and fluvial waters are the foremost source of water quality change 6 , 7 .…”

“…Hence more studies such as herein are needed to establish a baseline nitrate loading using current field crop practices. In a recent review by [47], it was noted that it is important to improve field-scale hydrology and water quality models under cold climates found in Canada and elsewhere in high-latitude regions. Studies that apply field data to calibrate and validate models, as done in this study, will lead to improvements in model accuracy in the future.…”

“…The NPS pollutants' monitoring and identi cation are the basis of NPS pollution's control and management. Techniques of automatic monitoring, stable isotopic tracer, three-dimensional uorescence spectrum and molecular biology have been widely used in the determination and source identi cation of NPS pollutants (Zhu et al, 2017;Kruk et al, 2020;Rudra et al, 2020;Chen et al, 2021). The frequency of keywords related to monitoring and identi cation was 361 times, while 133 times occurred in China, accounting for 37% (Fig.…”
