Current Trends in Vaginal Labioplasty

Abstract: This study provides data suggesting that labioplasty has been safely and effectively used by many plastic surgeons. However, there is great variation with regard to both techniques and practice guidelines. In establishing these discrepancies among surgeons, we hope to provide the impetus for further academic dialogue and prospective trials.

“…Both the wedge angle and amputation line decreased and shortened, thus diminishing the drawbacks of the two methods. According to a study, inadequate resection/redundancy, dehiscence/poor healing, and asymmetry are the most common complications responsible for re-operations in patients [18]. Dehiscence and asymmetry also occurred in our study, the rate of which is 4.1 % (2/49) and 2 % (1/49), respectively.…”

“…When comparing response rates with data from the literature, the response rate for German-speaking countries was relatively high at 47.5% compared with respective rates in the literature for comparable study designs ranging from 19.7% to 58% (Cummings et al, 2001;Leece et al, 2004;Mirzabeigi et al, 2012). The slightly lower response rate for the second and third parts of the questionnaire, despite greater accessibility via a web-based link, may be due to the fact that for many participating countries, the questionnaire was not in their native language; it is also in line with the findings of Leece et al (2004) that email-based questionnaires are not necessarily better accepted than mailed questionnaires.…”

“…Labioplasty involved excision and reconstruction interventions performed on labia minor. Even though it is reported to be made by aesthetic and functional concerns, it is also expressed that the practice is not supported by evidence-based findings [42,43]. Grover points out that the level of increase in this intervention is not acceptable and the society has to be educated on this subject.…”

“…In their study conducted in USA with participation of 750 surgeons, Mirzabeigi et al report that 2255 labioplasty operations in total were performed in a 24 months period, which means 7.37 operations per surgeon in the said 24 months period [42]. However, based on the information provided by the surgeons on their internet sites, it is seen that even a single surgeon can be involved in hundreds of labioplasty operations.…”
