This study presents a comprehensive needs analysis of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses in colleges of art and design in China. By examining the perspectives of undergraduate students, graduate students, art teachers, and English teachers, the research identifies consensus and divergence in ESP needs and implementation challenges. The analysis reveals a strong demand among students for specialized English learning, with a particular emphasis on receptive and interactive skills. However, there is a widespread acknowledgement of students’ difficulties across ESP skills, indicating a gap between student competencies and the professional demands, thus highlighting the need for targeted educational interventions to effectively address the difficulties. Notably, reading and writing abilities emerge as the most lacking skills. While there is unanimous recognition of the positive impact of ESP on students’ professional abilities and international competitiveness, a significant disparity exists in the enthusiasm for implementing ESP courses, paticularly with resistence from English teachers. The study highlights the critical challenges in ESP teaching, with teacher qualifications identified as the most prominent issue. Interestingly, English teachers attribute difficulties primarily to teaching materials, indicating a potential lack of readiness for ESP course delivery. A gap is also observed between teachers’ evaluations of student abilities and students’ self-assessment, especially among undergraduate freshmen, suggesting an overestimation of their English proficiency in professional contexts. The paper concludes with the implication that for effective ESP course implementation in colleges of art and design in China, targeted faculty development programs and a collaborative approach involving English teachers, art teachers, and professionals are essential. The collaboration should aim to develop materials that integrate specific professional knowledge with linguistic expertise. Additionally, a balanced approach combining general English proficiency and specialized English training is recommended to address both foundational and specialized language skills. Overall, the study underscores the need for targeted ESP courses in art and design education, tailored to bridge the gap between current proficiency levels and professional language requirements.

Sketching the investigative trends of research articles on the deployment of English for accounting: a scientometric study

This study scientometrically mapped the investigative trends in English for accounting (EA) research articles. The corpus was 181 research articles in EA from 1981 to 2021. They were retrieved from metadata dimensions of various leading journals and analyzed with automated bibliometric analysis. The findings revealed that the investigative themes in EA remain burgeoning for 41 years. The accounting history journal indicated the greatest impact on EA research. The analyzed journals reported a large impact correlating to their development. The most productive author in the EA research was Jones. The typical words frequently emerging in the analyzed research articles were accounting, research, and English. The investigative and developing topics related to EA were relatively dynamic. This study suggests that the scientometric investigative perspective offers a systematic, diachronic, and quantitative outline of English for accounting research by considering its meta-disciplinary knowledge and evolving trends over the years.

As English has become the lingua franca of business, English for specific purposes (ESP) has grown increasingly important in the global workplace. For example, Asia has witnessed significant economic and social development in recent decades, and an increasingly mobile and international population has given rise to a growing use of English as a lingua franca for labor and trade and as language for educational purposes (Basturkmen, 2022). Given these conditions, ESP programs can help learners succeed in their employment by providing them with the language skills they need to communicate successfully in English, which includes developing their cultural awareness and sensitivity for effective communication in intercultural settings. In this book, Pia Patricia P. Tenedero investigates language and communication practices and ideologies in accounting education and profession in the Philippines. Veering away from highly perceptionbased, skills-focused, and Global North-informed research, she focuses on the Philippines (a Global South representation), which has become a global leader in offshore accounting, as an ideal setting for examining issues surrounding multilingual, multimodal, and transnational workplace communication.Tenedero's book is divided into seven chapters in which she explains the (dis)connections between communication practices and ideologies in the contexts of accounting education and accounting work. In chapter 1, she introduces the book's main argument: communication is central to accounting work, especially in the context of globalized accounting enterprise in the Philippines. She shows that dominant views about communication in accounting are shaped by several factors, including the occupational stereotype of accountants as being good with numbers but bad with words, the Global North-centric focus of much accounting communication research, and the skills deficit discourse, which overemphasizes the role of higher education in developing students' work-relevant communication skills. Chapter 2, on the other hand, provides an overview of current deliberations about communication in accounting and situates the research focus on the communication skills of Filipino accountants, an underrepresented population in the Global South in terms of studies on communication practices and ideologies across the education-to-workplace continuum.
