Current Trends Featuring the Bridge Between Stroke and End-Stage Renal Disease: A Review

Abstract: The relationship between end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and cerebral stroke is graded and cumulative, having a significant impact on morbidity and mortality. Ischemic stroke is more prevalent than hemorrhagic stroke and both stroke types have modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. The presence of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and atrial fibrillation (AF) before stroke occurrence in dialysis patients has a significant impact on the outcomes such as a discharge to rehabilitation, in-hospital … Show more

“…These findings align with previous literature that demonstrated longer hospital stays and increased hospital costs for ESKD patients with concomitant PVD [9]. Given that ESKD patients face a three-fold increase in mortality risk after an ischemic stroke [30] compared to those without ESKD, the identification of ESKD patients with PVD as a high-risk population for ischemic cerebrovascular disease is of significant clinical importance [30].…”

“…Stroke patients have a higher risk of morbidity as well as mortality [1]. Prevalence of ischemic stroke is higher than hemorrhagic stroke in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients [2], but mortality is higher in patients with hemorrhagic stroke than in ischemic stroke [3]. ESRD increases the risk of stroke three times as compared to the general population [4,5].…”

“…2,3 Renal failure is not only a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, but also a potent risk factor for stroke. 4 In particular, the risk of stroke in the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population may be as high as 30-fold compared to the general population and is the third most common cause of death. Case fatality rates are also higher reaching almost 90%.…”
