Current Trends and Future Perspectives of Nanomaterials in Food Packaging Application

Abstract: Nanotechnology can improve the mechanical barrier and the antimicrobial (which will not allow the invasion of microorganisms in the food, increasing the food barrier properties, hence can be a very promising material for food packaging. Nanomaterials will keep the food fresh in the food packaging design. Silver nanoparticles and nanoclay represent most of the nanoempowered food packaging available on the market others like zinc oxide and titanium share little of the current market. Zinc oxide enhances nutritio… Show more

“…Food and Drug Administration has approved food packaging, CS-based, for preserving food and biodegradable films. Thus, CS can be employed as an edible packing material through spraying, dipping, and spreading techniques [56]. Morin-Crini et al stated that CS and its derivatives offer a diverse range of distinctive applications in the food industry, including food preservation against microbial degradation, extending the shelf-life extension, developing of biodegradable films, and packaging food (see Figure 3).…”

“…Then, it was subjected to mortar and pestle and was grinded to a fine powder. The water absorption was due to the macropores surrounded by a fibrous network of CS molecules which SEM observed [56]. Graft polymerization technique produced superabsorbent composite made up of CS and kaolin powder.…”

“…Food Packaging. Nano-based "smart" and "dynamic" food packaging's present a few benefits over regular bundling strategies from giving better bundling material superior mechanical strength, barrier protection, antimicrobial films to nanosensing for microbe recognition and making buyers aware of the wellbeing status of food [72].…”

“…These two are also approved by the FDA under recommended limited proportions (Al-Tayyar et al, 2020). In addition, these MNPs enhance the gas barrier properties of polymers, which ultimately aims at enhancing the shelf life of food (Chadha et al, 2022).…”

“…These can pose danger to both environments and human health (Mathew and Radhakrishnan, 2022). Both inorganic and organic MNPs are applied in nanofood and packaging systems, with the main aim to enhance the shelf life by providing antimicrobial protection against food pathogens; however, there is a chance of migration of these MNPs into food and subsequently to the human body, which later on tend to accumulate (Chadha et al, 2022;Mallia et al, 2022). The potential toxicologic effects of MNPs on human health have been widely studied by researchers using in vitro and in vivo approaches (Couto and Almeida, 2022).…”
