Current tectonic activity and differential uplift along the Cottian Alps/Po Plain boundary (NW Italy) as derived by PS-InSAR data

Abstract: This articulated tectonic setting results from the complex strain partitioning of the oblique convergence between the European and Adria plates, which is still ongoing, as indicated by seismotectonic and geodetic data.

“…The Padane alluvial basin (e.g. the Vercelli and Novara alluvial plains) and the Savigliano and Alessandria basins are filled by Quaternary successions whose deposition was controlled by recent tectonics (Delacou, Sue, Champagnac, & Burkhard, 2004;Eva & Solarino, 1998;Morelli, Piana, Mallen, Nicolò, & Fioraso, 2011;Perrone et al, 2013). For this reason, the Quaternary deposits are here considered as effective parts of the Alps-Apennines system.…”

“…This technique is one of the powerful SAR time series applications which can analyze land displacements, particularly in urban areas [64]. PSInSAR looks for Permanent Scatterers [65] with stable scattering properties and also relatively good coherence, over long period intervals in multi-temporal data [66]. For mapping ground deformation, a stack of SAR images of the same area is selected.…”

“…Subsidence had been caused by the excessive extraction of groundwater, oil and coal in these three areas, respectively. In this study, the subsidence deformation data of Cangzhou and Renqiu were obtained by permanently scattered interferometric synthetic aperture radar technology (Perrone et al, 2013), while data for Fengfeng District were captured by differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry technology (Chatterjee et al, 2006). All 280 soil samples were air dried, gently crushed, passed through a 2-mm sieve, and then pulverized by grinding.…”
