Current Technology Developments Can Improve the Quality of Research and Level of Evidence for Rehabilitation Interventions: A Narrative Review

Abstract: The current important limitations to the implementation of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in the rehabilitation field are related to the validation process of interventions. Indeed, most of the strict guidelines that have been developed for the validation of new drugs (i.e., double or triple blinded, strict control of the doses and intensity) cannot—or can only partially—be applied in rehabilitation. Well-powered, high-quality randomized controlled trials are more difficult to organize in rehabilitation (e.g., … Show more

“…This study demonstrates several notable strengths that enhance its robustness and scientific significance. Foremost among these strengths is the study’s commitment to real-world relevance, evident in its recognition of the critical importance of assessing patients in ecological environment and conditions [ 61 , 62 , 63 , 64 ]. This approach stands in stark contrast to conventional clinical tests, providing a more ecologically valid perspective on the rehabilitation process.…”

“…Additionally, the development of new affordable and portable technology and solutions can enable continuous patient monitoring and follow-up ( 51 , 52 ), leading to more individualized rehabilitation ( 53 ) and could allow the validation of new interventions or technologies ( 54 ). People-centered care is essential for this, as it involves actively involving the patient in the care, providing them with the knowledge and support they need to make decisions and engage in their own care, and ensuring that caregivers are performing optimally within a supportive working environment ( 55 ).…”

“…Mobile health technologies (e.g., wearable, portable, connected sensors) present a unique opportunity to capture and quantify a rich array of data concerning individuals' daily movements and exercise routines. This technological advancement allows for a comprehensive exploration of the intricacies of PA behavior, unveiling patterns that were previously di cult to discern using traditional self-report methods (19). The rise of these mobile health technologies equipped with sensors that measure motion, motor skills, and mobility for unsupervised, real-world scenarios, is becoming increasingly prominent as essential adjunctive tools in the conventional clinical evaluations (20).…”
