The generation of food waste poses an escalating societal challenge. Anaerobic digestion emerges as a sustainable and eco-friendly method for valorization and disposal. A small-scale floating drum-type digester was developed, operating in batch mode to harness biogas from three distinct food waste categories. Potato Waste (PW), Leftover Cooked Food (LCF), and Fish Waste (FW) were utilized as feedstock, maintained at an average temperature of 21°C for a retention time of 10 days, with cow manure serving as the inoculum source. The advances of the current work are built upon comparing biogas production volume and methane content from mono-anaerobic digestion of these various wastes. Examination of cow manure and different substrate samples offers insights into their composition, encompassing total solids, C/N ratio, and pH. Shredded raw wastes were wet-fed into the digester at a 1:1 waste/water ratio. Cumulative production of biogas and the methane fraction were monitored. The maximum cumulative biogas production per kg of waste was observed for LCF (73.5 L/kgWW), followed by FW (53 L/kgWW) and PW (37 L/kgWW). The maxium methane percentage occurred on the 7th to 8th day, with FW displaying the highest methane percentage (72%), trailed by LCF (54.6%) and PW (56%). A Statement of Novelty The novelty of this study lies in its multifaceted approach towards enhancing biogas production through mono-digestion of various organic waste materials. By focusing on the comparative analysis of these waste substrates in a controlled laboratory setting, using a simplified and efficiently designed floating drum digester, this research aims to shed light on their individual suitability for anaerobic digestion. Furthermore, the exploration extends to designing and deploying small-scale, decentralized anaerobic digestion systems tailored specifically for localized energy and waste management solutions, particularly beneficial in rural or off-grid areas. Through this integrated investigation, this study gives a comprehensive understanding of mono-digestion's contribution to biogas production and its implications for sustainable waste management practices.

Human activity and modern production contribute to the formation of a certain amount of waste that can be recycled to obtain useful products and energy sources. Today, the higher the level of industrial development, the greater the amount of waste generated, and as a result, the more important the need for disposal. A similar pattern is typical for any human production activity; as a result of large-scale production, at least 70–80% of waste is generated in relation to the amount of raw materials used. The large-scale use of polymeric materials and the plastic waste generated after their use lead to environmental pollution. While a small part of the waste is utilized naturally due to the vital activity of soil microorganisms, and a part is purposefully processed by humans into products for various purposes, a fairly large amount of waste occupies large areas in the form of a variety of garbage. After the removal of garbage by incineration, the liberated territories cannot be transferred to agricultural land due to the high content of harmful contaminants. The harm to the environment is quite obvious. In practice, certain types of waste consist of more than 70% content of valuable substances that can find further practical application in a wide variety of industries.

Anaerobic digestion is a demanding process, due to the large number of process and environmental factors that affect it. Many years of research of the various parameters have made it possible to optimise the process to obtain the maximum amount of biogas and methane contained in it, and this provides energy and environmental benefits. The article deals extensively with the operation of agricultural biogas plants, using the example of a plant that faces numerous operational problems. In order to identify the negative effects on energy yield and the equipment operating in the system, the substrate was examined, the data on its operation analysed, and solutions were proposed that should be taken into account in the further operation of the biogas plant. The analysis showed a good biogas yield from beet pulp of 563 dm3∙kg−1 of TS (total solid) and an average methane yield of 58%. With the analysis presented, it was possible to identify some operational problems. The biogas yield study also highlighted some errors made at the plant design stage. The most important of these is the use of an inappropriate organic matter loading factor for the digester, which leads to acidification of the contents and degradation of the methanogenic microorganism cultures.
