Current status of viral diseases in Indian shrimp aquaculture

Abstract: The intensification of aquaculture has been unique in showing the overwhelming changes in global food production in the last 100 years. Presently, it is playing a vital role in the economies of several countries. Conversely, it is also to be noted that the progression of aquaculture has been the foundation of anthropogenic alteration of a gigantic hierarchy and hence not astonishingly, it resulted in spread and emergence of an increasing group of new unknown diseases. In India, Penaeus monodon, black tiger shr… Show more

“…The study proposes a three-year cyclic sustainable intercrop timeline design for farmers and entrepreneurs. Monoculture Shrimp farming in India and other Southeast Asian nations are frequently affected by viral disease outbreaks [8, 9], the present study was conducted to present a more stable coastal farming system to the farmers of the region.…”

“…The Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, is one of the most important aquaculture shrimp species globally, accounting for nearly 80% or two-thirds of the total annual produce [1]. Unfortunately, the aquaculture industry suffers from various diseases and pathogenic infections caused by bacteria and viruses, which results in substantial economic losses [2,3]. Among shrimp bacterial diseases, acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is the most pathogenic and devastating disease that affects shrimp aquaculture [4].…”

“…Aquaculture, including shrimp farming, is the fastest-growing sector producing food of animal origin in the world [ 1 ]. Several emerging diseases, including acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), viral covert mortality disease (VCMD), infection by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP), and infection of shrimp hemocyte iridescent virus (SHIV), have impacted on the global shrimp aquaculture industry [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. More recently, a novel disease called “translucent post-larvae disease” (TPD) or “glass post-larvae disease” (GPD) in Penaeus vannamei has become a rapidly growing threat to shrimp farming in China recently [ 6 , 7 ].…”
