Current status of tissue harmonic imaging in endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and EUS‐elastography in pancreatobiliary diseases

Abstract: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) has high spatial and contrast resolution, and is thought to be one of the most reliable and efficient diagnostic modalities for pancreatobiliary diseases. Recent progress in EUS, especially in the development of the electronic scanning method, has enabled the application of several utilities and software of a high-end transabdominal ultrasound apparatus as an image-enhanced EUS. Tissue harmonic imaging (THI) is a novel US acquisition method that provides better US images by usi… Show more

“…EUS has high spatial resolution that allows the precise observation of the pancreas and pathological diagnosis by performing EUS‐guided fine‐needle aspiration (EUS‐FNA) 1–4 . In addition, remarkable advances in imaging technology have been made recently, such as contrast‐enhanced harmonic EUS and EUS elastography (EUS‐EG) 5–8 . EUS‐EG is a novel diagnostic method for evaluating tissue elasticity.…”

“…Diagnostic EUS has evolved with recent advancements in diagnostic ultrasound techniques, including contrast-enhanced EUS to evaluate blood flow and EUS elastography (EUS-EG) to evaluate tissue elasticity [1619]. Currently, only strain EG is available with EUS; however, because strain EG provides the relative elasticity within a region of interest (ROI), it lacks objectivity in terms of reproducibility and quantification [20, 21].…”
