Current status of Neisseria gonorrhoeae cervicitis in pregnant women in Japan

Abstract: We evaluated the current prevalence of gonococcal cervicitis among pregnant women in institutes that either do or do not routinely screen for gonococcal infection in Japan. We requested 2,330 obstetrical facilities to provide information on Neisseria gonorrhoeae cervicitis in pregnant women. A total of 1,876 (80.5%) of them responded. The universal screening test for gonococcal cervicitis, involving nucleic acid amplification for all pregnant women, was performed in 281 institutes (13.9% of institutes across J… Show more

“…This difference may be due to N. gonorrhoeae infection more often being symptomatic than C. trachomatis or M. genitalium infections, and therefore easier to diagnose during pregnancy. In other studies of pregnant women, the prevalence of N. gonorrhoeae has varied considerably, from 0% in France to 1.3% in Japan, 38,42 depending on variables such as age and geographical origin or ethnicity 43–45 …”

“…This results in many pregnant women not being diagnosed with cervical infections. A previous study involving 1,876 pregnant women in Japan noted that 84% of pregnant women with gonococcal cervicitis may have been missed in hospitals that do not routinely perform the screening test for gonococcal cervicitis ( 115 ). These pregnant women who are not diagnosed with cervical infection are also not given the proper management that can help in preventing ascending infections during pregnancy.…”

“…It can also be manifested as frequent pain in the lower abdomen or lumbosacral region, as well as some bladder and bowel symptoms. The concomitant diseases of chronic cervicitis include cervical erosion, cervical valgus, cervical polyps, cervical retention cyst, and endocervicitis (8,9). It seriously affects the quality of life of patients and brings a huge burden to the body and mind of patients.…”
