Nutraceuticals is one of the promising approaches for prevention and treatment of a large number of ailments. Nutrients, herbals and dietary supplements are major constituents of nutraceuticals, which make it instrumental in maintaining health, acting against various diseased conditions and thus to promote the quality of life. Diabetes mellitus is one of them. It is a multi-factorial metabolic disorder reflected by high blood sugar/glucose level. In spite of significant development in drug discovery to treat this disease, extensive efforts are on for finding a holistic approach by combining compounds from natural and synthetic drugs. Botanicals, vitamins, anti-oxidants, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids, collectively referred as 'nutraceuticals' , are important sources of new therapies for type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. This review summarises nutraceuticals with proven anti-diabetic potential in pre-clinical and clinical studies and explores the possibility of a new approach, 'polypathy' for synergistic management of diabetes.
