Current Status and Problems in Certification of Sustainable Forest Management in China

Abstract: Forest certification is a mechanism involving the regulation of trade of forest products in order to protect forest resources and improve forest management. Although China had a late start in adopting this process, the country has made good progress in recent years. As of July 31, 2009, 17 forest management enterprises and more than one million hectares of forests in China have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). “…Moreover, forest fragmentation seems to be an important factor, which affects not only the readiness to certify the forest, but also the choice of scheme. In relation to the perceived benefits, the certification process is often expensive in terms of cost and organizational effort for small forest owners (Zhao et al 2011). As reported by Di Lallo et al (2016), certification costs are the most critical limiting factor for smallholders.…”

“…This research has focused on the impacts of certification (Hain and Ahas 2007;Cubbage et al 2010;Sugiura et al 2012), environmental appropriateness (Tacconi et al 2004), price premium (Koller and Lagan 2007;Zhao et al 2011;Auer 2012), and the motivations of certification adopting (Araujo et al 2009). However, most of these studies were based on experience obtained in developed countries located in Europe and North America.…”

Therefore, foresters' views on SFM are important for implementation and maintenance of such techniques.…”
