Current state of infection and prevalence of giardiasis in Malaysia: a review of 20 years of research

Abstract: Background Giardiasis is a neglected parasitic zoonotic disease caused by Giardia duodenalis that is often overlooked despite the damage inflicted upon humans and domestic/wild animals. Lack of surveillance studies, low sensitivity of diagnostic tools, and resistance to giardiasis treatment add to the challenge in managing giardiasis, leaving a gap that continues to render giardiasis a silent threat to public health worldwide. “…Since it is the second leading cause of death related to infectious diseases, it is important to control the pathogens that lead to diarrhea, including giardiasis, to reduce the possibility of an increase in diarrhea-related deaths. With diarrhea being the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality due to infectious disease, proper diagnosis and treatment are essential [20]. In amoebiasis, the ingested infective cyst stage excysts in the small intestine as well but colonizes and invades the large intestine mucosal layer.…”

“…One of the most prevalent diseases affecting people is acute gastroenteritis, which has a higher morbidity and mortality rate in young children and the elderly than in any other age group (Jain & Jain 2014). Due to poor personal hygiene, hazardous water supplies, and poor sanitation, giardiasis is more common among residents in densely crowded locations like slums and prisons (Roshidi et al, 2021). Rainfall and snowmelt run-off can contaminate private wells by washing bacteria into the system or seeping beneath.…”
