Current State of Biomarkers in Bipolar Disorder

Abstract: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric illness of which the etiology remains unknown. Extensive research has provided some hypotheses for the pathophysiology of this disorder; however, there are no molecular tests available to help support the diagnosis obtained by self-report and behavioral observations. A major requirement is to identify potential biomarkers that could be used for early diagnosis in patients susceptible to the disease and for its treatment. The most recently published findings regard… Show more

“…Changes in mitochondrial function and redox modulation patterns were strongly associated with lipid peroxidation and DNA aberrations, which include changes in methylated and oxidized DNA. 3 Changes in protein conformation due to carbonylation and nitrosylation were also found; however, these alterations do not represent a strong correlation with the pathophysiology of BD. 127 Importantly, our group and others are already investigating studies with regard to how the lipid peroxidation process and DNA aberrations caused by mitochondrial dysfunction occur in BD.…”

“…These alterations could be directly correlated to dysregulation of the molecular pathways of inflammation and neurotrophins. 3,4 The factors that regulate neurological cells are expressed in a region-specific manner in the brain and the peripheral tissues. This suggests the possibility of using peripheral markers to address alterations in the brain that occur during the development of BD and other psychiatric disorders.…”

“…The abnormalities pertaining to activity in IFG could be a biomarker. Future studies might explore whether this failure to activate IFG is specific to BD and whether it is predictive of treatment response72630. The relatively high cost and limited availability of expertise in fMRI remain a limiting factor.…”

“…In the subsequent years, there has been a rise in the number of studies looking at the peripheral biomarkers in BD730. The potential advantages of this approach are its easy accessibility through venepuncture, low-cost and potential for wider availability and amenability to large-scale studies.…”
