With the continuous depletion of energy sources globally and serious concern regarding environmental degradation by the use of fossil fuel, biodiesel may play a key transponder. Biodiesel blended with diesel fuel achieves a decreased environmental footprint without losing the reliability of output and consumption. Biodiesel is produced from a variety of sources. Biodiesel generation from waste cooking oil (WCO) is effective for both the atmosphere and human health. Many research studies reported WCO biodiesel as a potential alternative fuel for internal combustion engine. The present study aims to provide key promoting and implementing agents for WCO utilization and WCO-based biodiesel production. A systematic literature review has been performed to identify enablers and the contextual relationship between various enablers was developed using interpretative structural modeling (ISM) and expert views. Using the method of ISM and cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) methodology, the impact of enablers is studied. The findings revealed that all established enablers play an important role and are equally important promoters for the development of biodiesel based on WCO. The findings further suggest that human health issues, biodiesel processing plants, biodiesel support vehicles, and biodiesel production technology play a key role in the manufacture of biodiesel dependent on WCO. The most important leaders in the development of WCO biodiesel are government policy and funding, confidence in environmental issues, and financial assistance to biodiesel manufacturers.

With the increasing fast-paced consumption culture in the world, our resources are rapidly decreasing, and environmental pollution is increasing with the unconscious release of used products to nature. With the decrease in resources, the issue of raw material supply emerges as a serious problem. Among the products used, the most harmful products to the environment are the oils that we use both industrially and individually. Used waste oils must be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner if they are not suitable for recycling. Unfortunately, 1 liter of waste vegetable oil damages exactly 1 million liters of drinking water, rendering it unusable. As a result of the mixing of waste vegetable oils with toxic properties into groundwater, clean water resources are polluted. Groundwater is a very important source of drinking water for all countries in the world. By reviewing the national and international literature on waste vegetable oils and their recycling, general and up-to-date information has been compiled, and this compilation study has been prepared by taking into account the current legal regulations. Throughout the study, it was aimed to raise awareness in order to leave a more livable environment, cleaner and healthier world to future generations, and some suggestions were developed and tried to be presented.

Background Biodiesel is an eco-friendly and renewable energy source and a valuable substitute for petro-diesel. Sago processing wastewater (SWW), a by-product of the cassava processing industry, has starch content ranging from 4 to 7 g L–1 and serves as an outstanding source for producing microbial lipids by the oleaginous microorganisms. In the present study, Candida tropicalis ASY2 was employed to optimize single-cell oil (SCO) production using SWW and subsequent transesterification by response surface methodology. Variables such as starch content, yeast extract, airflow rate, pH, and temperature significantly influenced lipid production in a preliminary study. The lipid production was scaled up to 5 L capacity airlift bioreactor and its optimization was done by response surface methodology. The dried yeast biomass obtained under optimized conditions from 5 L bioreactor was subjected to a direct transesterification process. Biomass: methanol ratio, catalyst concentration, and time were the variables used to attain higher FAME yield in the transesterification optimization process. Results Under optimized conditions, the highest lipid yield of 2.68 g L–1 was obtained with 15.33 g L–1 of starch content, 0.5 g L–1 of yeast extract, and 5.992 L min–1 of airflow rate in a bioreactor. The optimized direct transesterification process yielded a higher FAME yield of 86.56% at 1:20 biomass: methanol ratio, 0.4 M catalyst concentration, and a time of 6.85 h. Conclusions Thus, this optimized process rendered the microbial lipids derived from C. tropicalis ASY2 as potentially alternative oil substitutes for sustainable biodiesel production to meet the rising energy demands.
